Cherry Creek Mask Project

I was asked to paint a mask for the "Cherry Creek Mask Project" by the Sales Squad at the Curtis Hotel.
I have always wanted to partake in this event which benefits the Denver Hospice and is kind of a "big to do" in Denver. It is an auction with all proceeds going to benefit the Denver Hospice.

My design ideas were inspired by the Curtis Hotels retro theme as well as the palette used for marketing and branding. I have not painted in this style for a long while and love to do it, though it is tedious and time consuming to paint so clean and keep it smooth.

Here is a painting I started at the FeminiNitty show a couple Saturdays ago. As I was painting, I had a couple who were incredibly interested in the painting. I have stayed in contact with them and they have agreed to purchase the painting! Thank you April and Tony for your support {and purchasing a few other things} I really appreciate it and cant wait to work with you all again!

I was really happy to finally paint this drawing. I have used graphite, as well as marker with it before but painting it truly conveys what I had in my head. It also is a stepping to stone a new design I am working on for an all girl bike group called "Vixens". This painting is very similar to what the girls are looking for and painting it has invoked more inspiration for the drawing.

I opened my FB today and read this story. It sadden me yet, equally inspired me.

Jan Berenstain has passed away and I fee she deserves a blog post and some thoughtfulness into what her her husbands books + illustrations have done for me in those, oh-so-important, younger years!

I have very fond memories of 'The Berenstain Bears', their tree and all the little life lessons I learned growing up - most importantly - how to share with my sisters! Those books are still around, my brothers have read them and my niece is next in line. As an artist who wants to work in children's book illustration, I find books such as the Berenstain Bears to not only be great ways to teach children valuable lessons but also awesome ways of visually conveying these messages too. There is a stylistic subtlety to the line work in every illustration which makes it the Berenstains own creation. I love the cover of "The Problem With Money" as well as "No Girls Allowed" and "The Spooky Old Tree".

As a child I would walk into my elementary classroom to see a pile of red colored newsprint on my teachers desk and become ecstatic! It was one of my favorite days, I LOVED choosing a new book. Though always a tough decision, made tougher by only being allowed to choose one book {I was the oldest of 3 at the time}.

I recall after much time was spent reading titles and inspecting all the illustrations, I would settle on a book and impatiently await its arrival. In my younger years, Little Critter, The Berenstain Bears, Dr. Seuss/Theo Leseig + Serendipity books were my top choices!

Jan Berenstain, who wrote and illustrated the beloved Berenstain Bears books with her husband Stan, has died at age 88. She suffered a stroke on Thursday and died on Friday, according to her son Mike Berenstain.

Stan and Jan met on their first day of art school in 1941 when they were both just 18 years old. They published their first Berenstain Bears book, The Big Honey Hunt, in 1962; since then, more than 300 Berenstain books have been published in more than 23 languages. After Stan Berenstain died in 2005 at the age of 82, Mike Berenstain has collaborated with his mother on more recent titles, some of which have covered modern issues like online safety. “Every day she was very productive,” Mike Berenstain told the Associated Press. “She was working on two books and had been doing illustrations until the day before she passed away.”

Inspired by the Berenstain children, and later, the grandchildren, the Berenstain Bears books followed the adventures of Mama Bear, Papa Bear, Brother Bear, and Sister Bear. More than 260 million copies have been printed.

I just received an email informing me I was accepted to participate in *On Deck 7* a skate board art show raising funds to build skate parks through the Montana Skatepark Association! The show will open on May 4th at Brink Gallery in Missoula, Montana. I have been to Montana once and have always wanted a reason to return so here's hoping a road trip is in the near future!

I was recently contacted by a friend to paint pseudo-stained glass windows for the set design of a play entitled, *Southern Baptist Sissies* , presented by The Denver Element and Theater Out Denver.

"Southern Baptist Sissies is a comedy/drama about four young men struggling with their sexuality against the backdrop of religion. Its roots of inspiration are buried deep into the bedrock of hatred that was the Matthew Shepard murder. As is typical with Del Shores plays, SBS deals with real and emotional issues... but does so in a way that makes us laugh at ourselves... and then challenge our ways of thinking and acting."

The panels are plexi-glass and being painted with pin striping paint for the black out lines and craft paint to obtain a transparent affect when the light shines through.

I was commissioned to paint the Denver skyline combined with Chicago's skyline for a Christmas gift from a husband to his wife. It was a very last minute request and so in order to have it done by Christmas I was unable to get a high res photo or scan. Larry was gracious enough to provide these photos for me! Thank you Delton for assistance on the letter design.

Larry wanted to give his wife something for Christmas with more meaning behind it then the standard piece of jewelry, clothes etc... He asked me if I would be able to combine the two city skylines since she is originally from Chicago and he, Denver. We talked it over and decided on the color scheme and based on how they have decorating their house. Also - we decided to add the names on the opposite side from which they each slept.

I like the way it turned out and his wife was incredibly excited when she opened it as well! {it was the last gift AND was hidden, wrapped, under the couch} Danielle, also knew EXACTLY what he had done and why and with his personally written poem attached to the back - it was a Christmas gift they will both treasure for years to come!

This is an incredibly huge step for Denver AND the art scene in Denver. I hope this event has opened those oh so tightly closed doors in the city. It seems, finally, Denver is getting on board with urban styled art and artists.

I have been in love with makeup since I was a little girl - I wanted to have blue eye shadow and red lips. Purples - glitter and pink - I loved it all! In high school, I would sneak glitter or "fairy dust" as we called it then, to school along with other shadows and do my eyes up all purdy like on the bus. {to avoid the wrath of my mom!}
I am finally at a point in my life where the career path I had wanted to follow proved to be one I was not meant for so, I have decided, along with painting, I am going to forge my way into the world of makeup artistry.

Here are two faces I have had the pleasure of creating.

Alice In Chains + otha thangs...

The beginning of the year has, for me, been creatively slow but wonderful once I beat the nasty cold the NYE winds brought in... I have completed my Alice in Chains painting and I am currently working up some sketches for live painting at the Lady Wu Tang show at the end of the month!

Prior to the new year, I was commissioned to do a painting for a client combining Denver and Chicago's skylines with the addition of his wife and his name. This was a gift for Christmas and the idea was to create these two cities together, symbolizing their marriage and the family they have created together.

It was fun trying to imagine what the two cities would look like together while ensuring his wife would love it.

I was super pleased to her she knew right away what the concept was when she opened it on Christmas, down to the names being where they were. {The painting is above the bed and the names are opposite where they sleep}

There is SO much awesome, amazing, and fun stuff going on the last week of January I can't W-A-I-T!!!

Beginning January 23rd - I will be attending, and working at several different events!

It is all about holiday parties, SIA - Prime Element - Dilated Peoples - Na Palm - DJ Vajra - Common - Atmosphere + THE LADY WU TANG!

I will have more updates on each individual event as I acquire them.

EsNine {Prime Element and Enstereo} as well as cohort Cysko Rokwel {Prime Element and Crunk Bros} host a night on the 1st and 3d Saturdays every month mixing up a great array of jams from the 90s ensuring everyone leaves feeling sweaty, happy, nostalgic or that much cooler for the dance moves they busted out on the floor.
They will be bringing out Double K from People Under the Stairs as a guest DJ for the event as well as Denvers own Lazy Eyes

It pays to tweet. When video directors Lockerpartners noticed the recent Tweets of Denver hip-hop artist Mane Rok regarding the Occupy movement, they decided to approach him about a possible collaboration. They couldn’t have made a much better choice for the task.

“Through my work as part of L.I.F.E. Crew — the 14 man hip-hop crew — it was in my background to round up a group of artists and put a project together,” said Mane Rok in a recent phone interview. In short order, he brought on board some of the best and brightest from Denver’s hip-hop community: Dyalekt, Bravo One, Kalyn Heffernan of Wheelchair Sports Camp, Aja Black and Jonny 5 of the Flobots. “I reached out to various artists I both work with and admire, as well as going beyond those lines (and) reaching out to others I knew supported the movement and also represented the 99 percent.”

The video “99th Problem” opens and closes with comments made by former Florida congressman Alan Grayson on the “Real Time with Bill Maher” show recently. In between is a series of stirring performances from the above-mentioned artists shot amid lines of riot police in Denver’s Civic Center and through protest marches downtown.

“Occupy, as many have noted, is kind of a blanket movement for a series of issues that we (as a) nation face,” said Mane Rok. “It’s no longer the cries and moans of the disenfranchised, under-privileged American minority — these are issues that we all, the 99 percent, face. This is an awakening of the average American, realizing that there is a very minute amount of folks controlling our money, lives and politics.”

In addition to the video, Mane Rok is also involved with a series of weekly song releases about the movement. Look for the next release, by Denver-based artist Molina, in a special edition of Steal This Track on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Nintendo and 8bit Show!

I was a HUGE fan of Castlevania as a kid and decided to rock my own Dracula and bats for this show. I also had a huge collection of legos when I was a kid and integrated those into the design for this Nintendo consoel. I wanted everything to be a package and cohesive and I used the same type materials through out as well as colors. I had a ton of fun working on this project ^__^ The NES is fully functional, with a opening in the back for adapter and has been converted to a one player game witha lego door opening for the controller port. The blue inside the castle is the lid to insert the game and is also capable of fully opening.
The event was awesome with some really amazing peices. I will have more photos from the evening up at a later date!!!

First Plein Air adventure! Estes Park Colorado

A shot of the attempt at plein air I tried in Estes Park. This is a view of Twin Owls, a rocky cliff which kept fading in and out of the sunlight. I honestly never had any idea HOW difficult it is! I chose the rocks because I thought, hey, I can do THIS! Well... I am not terribly disappointed but I am definitely not pleased yet with my outcome. I look forward to trying this again.

Crown Hill is hosting the third annual El dia de los Muertos Celebration and will display oferendas as part of the celebration. We are looking for six oferendas/altars: categories include traditional, contemporary and artistic.

Guidelines include: table top and free standing, must not be larger than 5 feet long and 4 feet wide (there will be some floor space). Displays should be reasonably family friendly. As I am gearing up for the next couple of art shows, I have been in super, idea, sketch mode. Sunday was a perfect fall day here in Colorado and rather then be cooped up inside drawing - I went to the park in between Civic Center Park and the State Capitol. Unknown to me there was a festival with, paleterias, mexicano musica, and lots folks in good spirits, celebrating Mexican Independence Day. There were also a LOT of very hectic boots inspiring the sketch "Mr. Che Doh'. I didnt have my camera handy or this post would include a shot of the most INSANE silver, sequin-ey, sparkly, looks like they belonged in a Beyonce music video they were so blingy, "roach stomper" boots I have EVER seen! There were several interested little kids stopping by and I gave another day of the dead drawing to this little girl who gave me a thumbs up on my drawing. I did neglect to photograph it but I gave it to her on the condition she never throw it away... Heres hopin! HA! I also started working on a few small paintings, basica shapes and making said shapes opaque... It was a very wonderful amazing day yesterday!

It was inspired by the beauty and strength of the Chicana woman and the natural sexual power women possess. It is also a inspired by Dia de Los Muertos, a traditional holiday honoring the dead. The City We Love

941 Geary is pleased to present The City We Love, a large-scale group exhibition of works from artists living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. The show is co-curated by Justin Giarla and local graffiti practitioner APEX, and features new work from artists actively engaged in San Francisco’s graffiti and street art culture. The opening reception is on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 6-9 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through September 3.

Justin and APEX came together to organize this exhibition, with the shared motivation of wanting to show what’s going on right here, right now. The resulting exhibition is a modest sampling of what’s happening in the streets and studios of San Francisco, including work by locals APEX, Casey Gray, Chad Hasegawa, Chor Boogie, David Ball, D Young V, Ezra Li Estmont, Hugh Leeman, Jesse Hazelip, John Felix Arnold, Luke Todd, NEON, Siloette, Teen Witch and Vogue. With backgrounds as diverse as their respective artistic styles, the collection of works featured by this group of artists are as entrenched in conversation with each other in the gallery space as they are in the streets. 941 Geary’s expansive space serves as an ideal backdrop to the work: bold, graphic, daring, surprising and as unique as the city itself.

During my sophomore year in high school I decided to enter a school-wide contest to design our high school flag. I went to Evergreen high school - the home of the cougars. I came up with this design which beat 24 other students and I also won a $100! At the time, I was an incredibly shy kid and was forced to walk from the top bleachers down to the gymnasium floor to accept the award in front of our entire school. Embarrassed... but incredibly excited! Then, during my senior year in high school, Alumni Jeff Ashby, an astronaut with NASA was embarking on a flight into space and wanted to take something from Evergreen High with him...Lucky for me it was the flag! The article is about the flight and Jeff Ashby which I recently found going through old photos with my grandfather, and the flag is in a glass case still on display at Evergreen High School. I have tried numerous times to find out where they made the flag to try and get one for myself but the info is long gone and I have no idea when they stopped flying it. This is the actual flag which flew in space ^__^

I will be participating in an art show on July 29th. The piece I am working is completely out of my normal range of subject matter and will be a challenge. However, the concept is pretty rad! The theme of the show is sports culture of the 1908s and 1990s. I am working on a piece I think is comedic and artistic in nature. Cant wait to see it completed! Latest character - Since I am slacking on painting...

Since I have yet to finalize the painting I last posted (due to fear of over working it eeep!) I went to Broken Bread this week and got some good uninterrupted drawing in. This lil lady came out my head in couple hours. I began drawing an arm and a hand - things metamorphed into something wholly different then what I had in my head.. I went with it and after staring at it for a while (in small intervals) I realized some proportions were off and reworked the arms and hands. I like her a lot.. I may make her my new mascot!

There are many different styles of music my soul enjoys but the most influential genre of music in my life has, hands down, been hip hop. I was fortunate enough to be brought up during what most consider the "golden age" of hip hop -the 90s. Truly some AMAZING songs and memories come from a generation of music not many are able to capture... A Philadelphia Photo Story February and March 2011

I was pleasantly surprised when I stepped out from the subway on Market St. in Philly back in February. The city was amazing!!! Such a great vibe and I was overjoyed and surprised at how much the city embraces public art and promotes murals through out... Every corner I turned, ( I walked... and walked... and walked and turned many corners) there was something new and amazing and between the art, the history, the culture and the museums... I was incredibly fulfilled and invigorated after visiting the City of Brotherly Love! Here are a few pictures from my trip! I must mention - if given the chance - make sure to stop by the Mutter Museum.. a collection of oddities and wonders from the history of the scientific world!

I have taken on a very difficult task for myself and this is painting a face -foreshortened- This is a portion of the painting and I am diligently working to get the proportions of the face correct. Very tedious and time consuming but a challenge I openly accept as it has taught me a lot about shapes, shadows and myself as an artist! I know I can handle this kind of work and I feel wonderfully good about pushing myself and my comfort zone. I should have the completed piece up tonight!

I am waiting to get a full scan of this peice so the pictures are not 100% true color nor was I able to caputure the peice in its entirity. This was painted using acrylic on a wood panel approx 24"x36". This was actually a trade for an ipod from my sister oh so long ago - and I never quiet finished BUT she will be heading off to Law School (!!!) this summer and thought she could use some inspiration in her California diggs!

A painting I started live at the 2nd Queen Beez show at the D-Note. This peice is at an approxiamte 60% complete status of right now. The orginal drawing (and a susequent painting previously in my blog) were a lot less dark. I had never anticipated it becoming a more feirce and dark character, one I feel invokes visions of a vampire or creature of the night (I have been re-reading Anne Rice lately too!) Final to come soon!

I have been bringing my watercolor pencil set to work with me to multi-task and get a better feel for these amazing little inventions! I also have a Sakura "pocket feild sketch box" water color set with a mini paint brush which accompanys me in my journey through learning. The above drawings are a few older characters I have drawn and just recently pulled out and dusted off. I am in the mood for mixed media and will be adding guache and some acrylic as well as ink to these drawings. Please disregard the low quality of photo - my phone is slacking... Enjoy!

A recent trip to the zoo with my siblings, niece and my partner in crime. Spring time weather has been moderate and a lot of animals have been out and about! The cassowary rarely makes an appearance so I am very proud of the shot I was able to capture! Enjoy!

This is a painting inspired by the theme - Lovers + Haters. I opted to not go the route of the obvious and instead went with something I have always thought about in regards to graffiti and "the buff" 8"x10" acrylic washes on wood panel.

I was blessed to be part of one of thee most epic and amazing events I have seen in a long time! This last Saturday I paintined live while some of Denvers finest performed the classic hip hop album WutTang Enter the 36 Chambers. I was incredibly inspired by the event and created an imageinspired by the martial arts influence the album has as well as the all female performance. I was inspired by 1970s movie poster design as well. Here are some of the prelimenary drawings as well as the painting in progress at the show. Please note - there was a bit of difficuly and a test to my knowledge of mising colors as the lights were most of the time red - or green -

For the last few months my zoo membership has been getting some wear + tear! Around September I began steadily using the membership I was given at Christmas (eep!) to not only see the amazing animals we have at the zoo but, to begin learning more about animal anatomy and drawing from observation. My wonderful boyfriend who is a formally trained RMCAD graduate, expressed how useful this drawing can be to any artist. I must say, I have DEFINITELY seen an improvement in sketching and character design even after a few months. The most amazing outcome of drawing from observation is it is beginning to train my eyes to view things in shapes, forms and light and dark. It has really hiegntened my awareness to certain details as well and is also helping to keep my creative juices flowing! I am becoming looser with my hand and can not wait for warmer weather! The part time thing is working out wonderfully and surprisingly, even though I worked at 530am the other day - I was able to come home and paint this small concept afterwards. The painting is 2" x 4" on wood with acrylic. I chose to leave some things out of the drawing opting for a more simple and flowy vibe. I will probably repaint this in different tones to see what other effects I can achieve. It would be rad to see whta darks reds would look like and possibly a smaller ose - more true to the original.

As I am becoming more accustomed to working part time, I am readjusting my brain to think creatively again! I have been sketching, drawing and imagining as much as I can and hope to turn out some great paintings in the near future. Here is a sketch in progress for a new painting. I have been in the habit as of late, to get ready with my mug of coffee + my ipod all whilst wrapped in the most luxurious robe, which is where I drew my inspiration for 'Bath Time'. I LOVE my decision to get back to the heart and passions in my life... Expect some great things to come in the next couple months!

Another year... another Shoe Shine event! Shoe Shine is an annual Sneaker Exhibition and Competition with the goal of creatively engaging youth and the community at large through the integration of visual art and sneakers.

Athletic shoes or “sneakers” have become a fixture in fashion and popular culture, becoming increasingly valuable to their owners or collectors. Shoe Shine showcases the sneaker as an artist’s canvas unlike any other and allows us to marvel in the poss...ibilities for self-expression through footwear.

With this event, we provide young people, who often view sneakers as symbols of status or wealth, a channel to view them as art and as a medium to express their individual artistic abilities.

The shoes in the event are displayed gallery style, and a prize is given to the winner from each of the five categories that include; Best Men's, Best Women's, best Customized, Oldest & Cleanest, and Best in Show. Winners are determined by a combination of audience ballots and a small panel of celebrity/ expert judges.

Other elements of the event include: 1.) A “Customize Your

Own Sneaker” contest where children are invited to color-in a sneaker “silhouette” and receive a prize; 2.) The "Use the Backboard" exhibition where some of the nations top artists transform basketball hoops into amazing works of art; 3.) Custom painted sneakers commissioned by some of Denver’s top artists; 4.)“Live” shoe painting and customization; 5.) A skate competition and demo by local and national riders, prizes, games and giveaways for all ages.

Additionally at this year’s Shoe Shine, we will be working with Denver non-profit, The Prodigal Son Initiative, collecting gently used shoes for the “Souls for Soleil” drive which is an effort to provide footwear for Grace Village, an orphanage in Carrfour, Haiti.
